Researchers at the University of Bath found that if a woman has a better education than her man then the couple's chances of lasting happiness are improved.

The odds of staying together are also boosted if the man is older than the woman, which is unlikely to come as a huge shock either, as most of us girls prefer a mature guy.

Kate Taylor, relationship expert at online dating site match.com, said she was not surprised by the findings.

"Couples where the wife is the more educated tend to follow a similar pattern - she is the more 'sensible one', with higher aspirations, and her husband looks to her for inspiration," she explained.

Men prefer their wife to be their superior in education, spirituality and morality, as they feel that she can help them to be a better person.

"He can put this kind of woman on a higher pedestal than someone his equal or below," Kate said. Sounds good to me!

She also suggested that the research indicates the success of online dating, so ladies may want to try a site like match.com in between a spot of internet bingo.

"By using modern dating sites, men and women can use this research to its fullest and search for their statistically most successful partner," Kate explained.
