People have been enjoying bingo fun for hundreds of years, it has been claimed.
Writing in the Times and Transcript, Greg Weston said that, while the game has "come a long way and seen many changes since it first emerged in Europe in the sixteenth century", its popularity has not diminished.
He suggested that the modern form of bingo appeared in Italy in around 1530 and was known as Lo Giuoco del Lotto D'Italia.
According to Ron Pascal, co-chairman of the Moncton Lions Club, the appeal of the pursuit is connected with its communal atmosphere.
He noted: "To a lot of the bingo players it's a social event."
It also offers them the chance to win some money, Mr Pascal pointed out.
His club uses revenue generated by bingo games to put towards various local community groups.
Recently, John Terruso, captain of the Audubon fire department in Atlantic City, stated that bingo has retained its appeal in the face of ongoing the recession, with enthusiasts refusing to give up their passion for the activity despite the economic pressures, the Cherry Hill Courier Post reported.
