History of Bingo
Bingo has become a popular family and community game that is now making waves in online play. Accounts state that Bingo may have started from Italy or Spain. Bingo is known as the son of Italian national lottery called the Lo Giuoco del Lotto d'Italia. This national lottery was held every week and is still running today. Following the success of the Italian lottery, the French invented their own version of classic lotto. The fancy French lotto cards are numbered from 1 to 90 in nine rows of ten. The first player to cover a horizontal row wins.
History of Bingo Play in the 1800's
The 19th century saw a new mark for bingo as it transcended from public play to private games. Educational lotto games were designed in Germany to teach children multiplication tables. Milton Bradley sold a version of bingo that features the Muppets. These cards became helpful tools for children as parents teach them how to count with bingo cards.
Modern Bingo and Beano
The United States then took interest of the game that was once called "beano". Bingo as it is known then was featured in country fairs and community events. They mark these then bingo cards with beans, and they would yell “beano” when they have completed the pattern first. Modern bingo started with the vision of Edwin S. Lowe, a salesman in New York. He hired a mathematician from Columbia University to help him increase the number of combinations of these cards. Bingo spiked in popularity when a Catholic priest asked Lowe to introduce the game for church raising activities. Since then, the game has become an icon as a favored pastime until it evolved to what it is today. Even with different family games offered electronically, bingo is a worthwhile classic game that is still played in town events and in parties.
